50 Windows 8 Cool tips, tricks and secrets

Windows 8 is coming, and the recent Consumer Preview showed it's very different to what's gone before.
Out goes the Start menu, in comes the new touch-oriented Metro Start screen, new apps, new interface conventions - even experienced PC users may be left feeling a little lost.
Don't despair, though, help is at hand. We've been investigating every part of Windows 8 Consumer Preview, uncovering many of its most important tips and tricks, so read our guide and you'll soon be equipped to get the most out of Microsoft's latest release.
1. Lock screen
Windows 8 opens on its lock screen, which looks pretty but unfortunately displays no clues about what to do next.
It's all very straightforward, though. Just tap the space bar, spin the mouse wheel or swipe upwards on a touch screen to reveal a regular login screen with the user name you created during installation. Enter your password to begin.
2. Basic navigation
Windows 8 launches with its new Metro interface, all colorful tiles and touch-friendly apps. And if you're using a tablet then it'll all be very straightforward: just swipe left or right to scroll the screen, and tap any tile of interest.
On a regular desktop, though, you might alternatively spin the mouse wheel to scroll backwards and forwards.
And you can also use the keyboard. Press the Home or End keys to jump from one end of your Start screen to the other, for instance, then use the cursor keys to select a particular tile, tapping Enter to select it. Press the Windows key to return to the Metro screen; right-click (or swipe down on) apps you don't need and select Unpin to remove them; and drag and drop the other tiles around to organise them as you like.
3. App groups
The Start screen apps are initially displayed in a fairly random order, but if you'd prefer a more organised life then it's easy to sort them into custom groups.
You might drag People, Mail, Messaging and Calendar over to the left-hand side, for instance, to form a separate "People" group. Click the magnifying glass icon in the bottom right corner of the screen to carry out a "semantic zoom", and you'll now find you can drag and drop the new group (or any of the others) around as a block.
Right-click within the block (while still in the semantic zoom view) and you'll also be able to give the group a name, which - if you go on to add another 20 or 30 apps to your Start screen - will make it much easier to find the tools you need.
4. Simplified Start menu?
The Windows 8 Developer Preview had a very basic Start menu which you could access by swiping from the right side of a touch screen, or moving the mouse cursor to the bottom left corner of the screen. This has changed a little in the Consumer Preview: now you need to right-click in the bottom left corner (or hold down the Windows key and press X) for a text-based menu which provides easy access to lots of useful applets and features: Device Manager, Control Panel, Explorer, the Search dialog and more.
5. Find your applications
The Win+X menu is useful, but no substitute for the old Start menu as it doesn't provide access to your applications. To find this, hold down the Windows key and press Q (or right-click an empty part of the Start screen and select All Apps) to reveal a scrolling list of all your installed applications. Browse the various tiles to find what you need and click the relevant app to launch it.
6. Easy access
If there's an application you use all the time then you don't have to access it via the search system, of course. Pin it to the Start screen and it'll be available at a click.
Start by typing part of the name of your application. Windows 8 Consumer Preview makes it more difficult to access Control Panel, for instance, so type Control.
Right-click the "Control Panel" tile on the Apps Search screen, and click "Pin to Start".
Now press the Windows key, scroll to the right and you'll see the Control Panel tile at the far end. Drag and drop this over to the left somewhere if you'd like it more easily accessible, then click the tile to open the desktop along with the Control Panel window, and press the Windows key to return you to the Start screen when you've done.
7. Shutting down
You've finished your first Windows 8 session, and would like to close your system down - but with no Start menu it's not exactly obvious how this can be done.
It's easy enough when you know the secret, though. Just move the mouse cursor to the bottom right corner of the screen, click the Settings icon - or just hold down the Windows key and press I - and you'll see a power button. Click this and choose "Shut down" or "Restart".
Some of the tricks available in previous versions of Windows still apply. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, for instance, click the power button in the bottom right-hand corner and you'll be presented with the same "Shut down" and "Restart" options.
And if you're on the desktop, press Alt+F4 and you'll be able to choose Shut Down, Restart, Sign Out or Switch User options.

Internet Shutdown on 9th July – DNS Changer Worm

Internet Shutdown on 9th July – DNS Changer Worm
FBI is shutting down dns changer malware servers on 9th July. You may permanently loose your internet access. Please read the full report  in order to save your self from Internet Shutdown 2012.

No Facebook Friends, No YouTube videos, No Twitting & Boring nights…

Yeah ! you read it right. You probably will loose your access to internet on 9th July 2012 (forever). This is no way a scam. It was announced by FBI. So, you wanna know the reason behind this ?
Ok, here it goes.
Nearly four million computer are affected by a dangerous malware. The malware, if in your PC will control the Domain Name servings for your computer.  FBI busted this very operation last year. Alas ! millions of systems were already infected by then. So, the FBI took a decision to run the DNS Changer Servers themselves and guide the systems to correct paths. But, they recently announced that they won’t be serving this anymore and would switch those servers off, for ever on 9th July.
An easy explanation for Non-Techies !
In general your computer asks for the address, of every page you type, to a big computer. Suppose www.facebook.com. If we type this into the browser, our computer will ask a central (big) computer “Where does facebook.com live ?”. The system would then reply “Facebook.com lives in a server whose address is 69.63.176.13 (in computer terms this would be like Server 34 at Facebook Headquarter, Delhi, India). Now our system would go to the told place and get facebook pages. This seems hell lot of work, right ! all is done within seconds. But, if your computer is infected with the DNS changer, your system will no be able to ask the big main computer for address and will ask the hacker’s (DNS Changer’s owner/creator) computer for Facebook’s address. The hacker would send a wrong address back to us. Now, our computer will follow that very address and go to the Facebook page that was designed by the hacker to steal your password. This was a small example of what the hacker can do. Imagine what would happen if the same happens with your bank websites too. All your money gone to them.

DON’T WORRY, WE HAVE THE CURE.

Follow these steps and you can save internet.
First of all, check if your system is infected by DNS changer worm. Go to http://www.dns-ok.us and run the check. If they show your computer infected then you really should worry. But, hey you are at Digital Saliva, lemme handle the worry for you. Result of that check is not 100% true, its best recommended to run a manual check

Manual Check  for DNS Changer

Open Command Prompt
Click on  START button on the left-bottom corner and type cmd.
Open Command Prompt
After you see the command prompt window, type in the following command ipconfig /allcompartments /all.
Type Command in Command Prompt
Now find what DNS you are using.
DNS Server Information
Now, don’t start scratching your head if you don’t see that 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 on your screen. Just note those two numbers and tally them with this list.
IP Range of Rove DNS settings :
85.255.112.0 – 85.255.127.255
67.210.0.0 – 67.210.15.255
93.188.160.0 – 93.188.167.255
77.67.83.0 –  77.67.83.255
213.109.64.0 –  213.109.79.255
64.28.176.0 – 64.28.191.255
If the numbers you found on now match with these, then you are affected with the worm.

Follow these steps in order to ensure that you don’t loose your access to internet on 9th July.

Some preventives first :
  • The first thing you want to do is make a backup of all of your important files. You might go to a computer store or shop online for a portable hard drive and copy all of your files onto that drive.
  • Either you or a computer professional that you rely upon and trust should follow the “self help” malware clean up guides listed below. The goal is to remove the malware and recover your PC from the control of the criminals that distributed it. If you were already thinking of upgrading to a new computer, now may be a good time to make the switch.
  • Once you have a clean PC, follow instructions for ensuring that your DNS settings are correct. If you’re not using a new PC, you’ll want to check that your computer’s DNS settings are not still using the DNS Changer DNS servers. We hope to have some of our own instructions soon. Until then, the instructions and screen shots found in step 2 at http://opendns.com/dns-changer are quite good if you want to manually set your DNS settings. You also have the option to return to using your ISP-provided automatic settings by choosing the “automatically” option (Windows) or deleting any DNS servers listed (MacOS).
  • After you have fixed your computer, you will want to look at any home router you’re using and make sure they automatically use DNS settings provided by the ISP. We’ll have a document for this soon.
  • Changing DNS is only one of the functions of the malware kits. The malware could have been used for capturing keystrokes or acting as a proxy for traffic to sensitive sites like bank accounts or social media. It would be a good idea to check your bank statements and credit reports as well as change passwords on any online accounts especially saved passwords from your applications or web browsers.
Now you should run a proper anti virus check and restart your PC and again check for the worm, it should be gone. If not, please let us know and we will help you removing it. Do refer http://www.dcwg.org/ for more information.
Many of you don’t share stuff from the internet on your social networks or via mail. But, this is no random stuff. This is digital age and today loss of internet may be very fatal. I hope you understand me and please share this post though the social media buttons either below or copy this text and share it on your wall. We are not doing this for any personal benifit of ours because we don’t put on ads or have any money share for readings. Its purely to save you and millions like you from loosing their internet connection for ever…
Copy Paste this on your wall, twit it, mail it …
